General information
Spain is one of Europe’s most diverse countries, known for Madrid, Barcelona, Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, the Pyrenees, coastlines, tapas, wine, architecture, flamenco and strong regional identities. It lies on the Iberian Peninsula, but its character is expanded by islands and autonomous regions. The capital Madrid is a large, lively and culturally powerful inland metropolis. Other essential places include Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, Granada, Bilbao, Málaga, Zaragoza, Santiago de Compostela, Mallorca, Tenerife and other islands. Spain suits travelers who want cities, beaches, mountains, islands, food, nightlife, culture, road trips and travel where the day often starts late and ends even later.
Travel
Madrid offers the Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen museums, parks, markets, tapas bars and a royal atmosphere without the sea but with enormous energy. Barcelona combines Gaudí architecture, beaches, neighborhoods, gastronomy and Catalan identity. Andalusia is strong in cities such as Seville, Granada, Córdoba and Málaga, where Moorish heritage, flamenco, white villages and hot weather meet. Valencia offers beaches, modern architecture and paella, while Bilbao and San Sebastián bring Basque culture and outstanding food. The Balearic and Canary Islands offer very different island worlds. Spain is ideal for city breaks, beach holidays, islands, the Camino de Santiago, mountains, festivals and long regional itineraries.
Life and work
Life in Spain is social, outdoor-oriented and strongly regional. Madrid and Barcelona have the strongest job markets, especially in technology, services, tourism, finance, media, education, creative fields and international companies. Valencia, Málaga, Seville, Bilbao and Zaragoza often offer a better balance between quality of life, prices and urban energy. Costs vary greatly: Madrid, Barcelona and popular coastal areas are more expensive, while smaller cities and inland regions are more affordable. Spanish is essential for long-term life, and in some regions Catalan, Basque or Galician also play important roles. Spain suits people who value sunshine, social life, food, outdoor living and do not mind a later daily rhythm or summer heat.
Culture and food
Spanish culture is varied, loud, regional and strongly connected with food, family, streets, music, festivals and evening life. There is not really one Spain: Andalusia, Catalonia, the Basque Country, Galicia, Castile, Valencia and the Canary Islands all have their own identity, food and rhythm. Food is a huge pleasure: tapas, tortilla española, paella, gazpacho, jamón ibérico, churros, pintxos, seafood, patatas bravas, croquetas, pulpo a la gallega, wine, cava and sherry are among the essentials. Food culture is social — often more about sharing than quick eating. Spain can be loud, hot and a little chaotic, but when you sit on a square in the evening with something small on your plate, most objections quietly melt away.
Practical notes
In Spain, pay attention to local bylaws, beaches, city traffic and drink-driving limits. Alcohol is widely available, and wine, beer and vermouth are part of the culture, but public drinking is restricted or banned in many cities, especially because of botellón-style street drinking. Night noise, drunken behavior in centers and inappropriate behavior in historic quarters or resorts can lead to fines. Smoking and vaping are restricted in indoor public spaces, public transport, restaurants, bars and on many beaches or outdoor places depending on regional and local rules. Topless sunbathing is common on many Spanish beaches, and naturism has a strong tradition on designated or tolerant beaches, but in towns, near churches, on promenades and in shops, normal clothing is expected. Cannabis is not freely legal tourist recreation: private use in limited contexts and cannabis clubs have specific rules, but public consumption, street purchase, carrying it across borders or driving under the influence can cause serious trouble. For CBD, kratom and similar products, check current rules and exact composition. When driving, remember that many one-lane urban streets are limited to 30 km/h, other urban roads often to 50 km/h, outside built-up areas usually to 90 km/h and motorways to 120 km/h, unless signs say otherwise. The drink-driving limit is 0.5 g/l for standard drivers and lower for novice and professional drivers. Many motorways are toll-free, but some sections are still tolled; in large cities, watch low-emission zones, parking and access rules for city centers.
