General information
Emilia-Romagna and the Northern Apennines are a region where you eat very well, travel easily and find an Italy that feels practical, educated and less overwhelmed than the most famous tourist centres. Bologna is a university and food capital, while Parma and Modena are names that should be pronounced carefully around hungry people. The area includes Bologna, Parma, Modena, Ravenna, Ferrara, Rimini, nearby San Marino, Piacenza and the Apennine interior.
Trips and nature
The region combines the Po plain, the Northern Apennines and the Adriatic coast. The mountains are not as dramatic as the Alps, but they are good for quiet trips, spa towns and rural breaks. The coast around Rimini is long, sandy and strongly recreational, especially for family summer holidays.
Food and atmosphere
Culturally, the region is extremely rich. Ravenna has famous Byzantine mosaics, Ferrara Renaissance urban planning, Bologna its porticoes, university life and red-brick streets. Food is the main theme: tagliatelle al ragù, tortellini, mortadella, Parmigiano Reggiano, prosciutto di Parma, balsamic vinegar from Modena, Lambrusco and piadina.
Transport and stay
The region has excellent rail connections, with Bologna as a major hub. Most cities are easy without a car, while a car helps for countryside, Apennine areas and food stops. It is ideal for 4 to 7 days, gastronomy, cities, mosaics, trains and an Italy where you do not always have to stand in line.
