General information

Bulgaria is a Balkan country between Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, Turkey and the Black Sea. It is known for Sofia, the Rila, Pirin and Rhodope mountains, the Black Sea coast, monasteries, the Rose Valley, Thracian heritage, affordable resorts and a strong mix of Slavic, Balkan and Oriental influences. The capital Sofia lies below Mount Vitosha, where Roman remains, Orthodox churches, socialist architecture, cafes and quick access to nature meet. Other important places include Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Veliko Tarnovo, Rila Monastery, Bansko, Nessebar, Sozopol and the Rhodope Mountains. Bulgaria suits travelers who want mountains, sea, history, affordable travel, Balkan atmosphere and a country that is far more varied than summer all-inclusive holidays suggest.

Travel

Sofia is a good entry point thanks to its sights, cafes, museums and nearby Vitosha Mountain. Plovdiv is one of the Balkans’ most pleasant cities, with an ancient theater, old town, the creative Kapana district and a relaxed atmosphere. Varna and Burgas are the main gateways to the sea, while Nessebar and Sozopol offer historic coastal towns. Rila Monastery is one of the country’s greatest spiritual and cultural landmarks. Natural highlights include Rila, Pirin, the Rhodopes, the Seven Rila Lakes, Bansko, Vitosha and inland nature parks. Bulgaria works well for beach holidays, mountain hiking, winter skiing, road trips, thermal springs, monasteries and discovering a less polished but very interesting part of Europe.

Life and work

Life in Bulgaria is more affordable than in most of the EU, but the quality of services and infrastructure can vary greatly by region. Sofia has the strongest job market, especially in IT, outsourcing, finance, services, education, startups and international companies. Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas and Veliko Tarnovo offer smaller, cheaper and calmer alternatives, sometimes with better access to the sea or nature. English is more common among younger people and in large cities, but Bulgarian and the Cyrillic alphabet are very important for deeper integration. Bulgaria suits people who want low costs, mountains and sea, a slightly more adventurous daily life, Balkan energy and who do not mind slower administration or uneven public services.

Culture and food

Bulgarian culture is connected with Orthodoxy, folk music, dances, mountains, rural life, family, wine, rose oil and a long history between Europe and the Orient. The cuisine is flavorful, vegetable-rich, dairy-heavy, meat-friendly and well suited to long meals. Typical foods include shopska salad, banitsa, kavarma, kebapche, kyufte, tarator, kiselo mlyako, lyutenitsa, sarmi, grilled meats, cheeses, wine and rakia. Cities offer modern cafes, bars and restaurants, while rural and mountain areas keep more traditional flavors. Bulgaria is a little raw, sometimes chaotic and often very warm-hearted — a country where an old monastery, a cheap dinner and a mountain view can all surprise you in one day.

Practical notes

In Bulgaria, it is better to be practical than a romantic Balkan wanderer. Alcohol is widely available and rakia is part of social life, but public drunkenness or loud behavior can cause problems, especially in city centers, on public transport or near family beaches. Smoking is common, but it is banned in indoor public spaces, restaurants, bars, offices and public transport; playgrounds and similar child-focused areas usually have stricter rules. On the Black Sea coast, standard European swimwear is normal, but naturism belongs mainly on designated or unofficially known beaches; outside tourist zones it is better to be more discreet. Drugs are a very sensitive issue in Bulgaria: cannabis, THC products and other illegal substances can lead to heavy fines, detention or prison. Be careful with CBD, cannabis derivatives, kratom and similar products too — do not assume that something sold elsewhere in Europe can be safely brought into Bulgaria. When driving, expect limits around 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h outside built-up areas and up to 140 km/h on motorways, unless signs say otherwise. The drink-driving limit is 0.5 g/l, and driving under the influence of drugs, including THC, is forbidden. Daytime running lights are mandatory even during the day, and passenger cars need an electronic vignette on most main roads and motorways. With a rental car, always check that the e-vignette is actually paid.
