Praia das Catedrais: Galicia’s rock-arch beach best visited at low tide

Praia das Catedrais, also known locally as Praia de Augas Santas, is not a beach you visit mainly to lie in the sun all day. Its real pull is the landscape. At low tide, the sand opens below tall cliffs, sea-carved arches, tunnels and natural stone walls that explain the popular “cathedrals” name.

Why go

The beach works best when the tide is out. That is when you can walk below the cliffs and feel the scale of the rock formations. At high tide, much of that walking space disappears, so the visit becomes more about viewpoints than beach access.

Swimming is not the main reason to come. The water is Atlantic, the weather can change quickly and timing matters more than packing a towel and hoping for a classic beach day.

How to plan it

During regulated periods, visitors need a free access authorisation. The official Xunta de Galicia booking site lists Easter and 1 July to 30 September as reservation periods. Both access authorisation and official guided visits are free, but places can run out in high season.

Plan around the tide first, then the reservation, weather and any temporary restrictions. If you arrive at the wrong tide, the place can still be beautiful from above, but the classic walk under the arches may not be possible or safe.

Practical notes

This is a protected natural monument, not an open amusement beach. Use marked access points, avoid unstable rocks and keep a close eye on children near the water and cliffs. Summer, filming, conservation work or special events can add extra restrictions.

Bottom line

Praia das Catedrais is one of the best coastal stops in Galicia if you accept that the ocean sets the schedule. Come with a permit when required, check low tide, and leave enough flexibility in your day.
