Seville Cathedral and La Giralda: a Gothic giant, a transformed minaret and old-city views

Seville Cathedral does not aim for subtlety. It arrives with a scale that almost presses down on your shoulders: a vast Gothic nave, chapels, a gilded altarpiece, the tomb of Christopher Columbus and La Giralda, a tower with the memory of a minaret. In a city of orange trees, heat, tiled patios and noisy bars, the cathedral feels like Seville’s stone anchor.

Do not rush straight to the tower. The interior needs a little time before its size makes sense. Details disappear into the vastness: altars, side chapels, silverwork, darker corners and sudden patches of quiet. La Giralda then becomes a second chapter. You climb by ramps rather than ordinary stairs, a legacy of the older tower and a gentler way to rise above the roofs.

From the top, Seville becomes easier to read. You see the Alcazar, pale and ochre rooftops, the curve of streets and a city that hides from summer heat by day and wakes again in the evening. That is what makes the visit more than a Gothic monument: Islamic memory, Christian power, the age of overseas trade and today’s Sevillian rhythm all sit in the same frame.

Choose a part of the day when the heat has not already emptied you. The cathedral and the Alcazar can be done together, but they are a dense pair. If you have only one day, put a break between them: water, shade and a bit of aimless walking. Seville is easier to understand when you occasionally stop trying to conquer it.
