Alhambra in Granada: Nasrid Palaces, Generalife and the ticket you should not leave late

The Alhambra is not simply a castle above Granada. It is a large complex of palaces, fortifications and gardens where Nasrid power, later Christian Granada, views of the Albaicín and the water landscapes of the Generalife all meet. For a first visit, the key thing to understand is that this is not a place to improvise at the ticket office.

Why go

The heart of the visit is the Nasrid Palaces. This is where the Alhambra shows its finest side: delicate plasterwork, inscriptions, geometry, shade, water, courtyards and rooms that feel light despite their historic weight. The Generalife is the calmer counterpoint, with gardens, channels, views and a palace landscape where water is part of the design, not just decoration.

A good Alhambra visit is not a sprint. Allow for walking between areas, ticket checks and uneven surfaces. In summer, Granada can be very hot, so water, light clothing and comfortable shoes matter.

How to plan it

Use official ticket channels and watch your Nasrid Palaces time slot. Official rules state that access to the palaces is only at the time printed on the ticket. Being late is not a small inconvenience; it can mean missing the visit. Every visitor also needs an original ID card or passport and their own ticket, including children under 12.

If you want the main experience, choose the general daytime ticket. If those slots are gone or you have less time, the Gardens, Generalife and Alcazaba ticket can still work, but it is not a full substitute for the Nasrid Palaces.

Practical notes

Large backpacks over 40 x 40 cm are not allowed in the Nasrid Palaces, Generalife Palace and Alcazaba. Flash, tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed in the Nasrid Palaces. Pushchairs and animals also have restrictions, with exceptions for recognised assistance cases.

In July 2026 the Mexuar is temporarily closed for conservation works. That does not make the Alhambra any less worth visiting, but it is a good reason to check official notices before you go.

Bottom line

The Alhambra rewards preparation. Buy official tickets early, arrive ahead of time, bring ID, water and good shoes, and treat the Nasrid Palaces slot as the anchor of your day.
