General information
Istanbul, Marmara and European Turkey are the most natural gateway to the country. Istanbul is a vast city between Europe and Asia, where mosques, palaces, bazaars, ferries, tea houses, modern districts, nightlife and everyday chaos meet.
Trips and nature
The main natural element is water. Istanbul is best understood from a ferry, because the city unfolds along shores, hills, bays and neighbourhoods with very different energy. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.
Food and atmosphere
Culturally, Istanbul is exceptional thanks to its Byzantine, Ottoman and modern layers. Edirne adds major Ottoman architecture and Bursa an older Ottoman tradition. Food includes kebabs, meze, fish, simit, baklava, Turkish coffee, tea and street food.
Transport and stay
Istanbul has two major airports, metro, trams, buses, ferries and heavy traffic. A car makes little sense in the city. The area is ideal for 4 to 7 days, history, food, neighbourhoods and ferry rides across the Bosphorus.
