Kirroughtree 7stanes: granite rock and quiet forest near Newton Stewart

Kirroughtree is the most remote and quiet of this trio. It sits near Newton Stewart in Galloway Forest Park, where the noise of towns drops away quickly behind the trail centre and the day becomes woodland, wet ground, granite outcrops and the long light of south-west Scotland. This is not a lift-repeat venue, but a proper day out on the bike.

Green and blue routes give families and steadier riders room for a flowing forest outing. The red and black options are much more serious, with rock, technical sections and places where slowing down and reading the line matters. That contrast between accessible loops and rocky features is what makes Kirroughtree memorable.

Arrive prepared. There are fewer fall-back options than near big towns, the weather can turn, and on longer loops it helps to carry basic tools, water and a warmer layer. After rain, the hardest sections are not the place to prove a point.

Kirroughtree is best for riders who want a quieter trail day and a landscape that feels more than just background scenery. After riding, you can stay in Galloway, continue toward the coast or link it with other 7stanes sites in south-west Scotland. The pace is slower here, but the technical riding is very real.
