General information
Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Scottish Lowlands form the cultural and transport heart of Scotland. Edinburgh is historic and dramatic, while Glasgow is larger, livelier, musical and less polished.
Trips and nature
The Lowlands are softer than the Highlands but very varied: Arthur’s Seat, Calton Hill, the Clyde, Loch Lomond nearby, Fife coast and the rolling Borders.
Food and atmosphere
Edinburgh’s Old and New Towns are outstanding, while Glasgow brings galleries, music, Mackintosh architecture and street art. Stirling, St Andrews and the Borders add history and university tradition.
Transport and stay
Edinburgh and Glasgow both have airports and strong rail links. Trains work well between cities, while a car helps for Borders, Fife, coast and Loch Lomond.
