Gwydir Mawr / Marin Trail

Gwydir Mawr, also known as the Marin Trail is a classic forest loop with a long place in UK trail-centre riding in Snowdonia and the Conwy Valley in North Wales. It is not about alpine spectacle; the appeal is a straightforward riding day where the forest, weather and trail surface shape the experience more than resort infrastructure.

The area works best for riders who want proper waymarked mountain-bike loops and a clear sense of progression. Publicly available references describe an approximately 28 km competition-style route with about 860 m of climbing, broad forest tracks, old miners' paths and views towards the Glyderau, Carneddau and Snowdon massifs. Newer riders should start with the shorter or easier options, while confident riders will enjoy the rougher sections, rock, roots and changing grip after rain.

Treat the visit as a practical trail day: check the latest trail status first, then choose the loop according to fitness and conditions. The practical base is Betws-y-Coed, where visitors can arrive by car or train and continue to the official forest parking areas.
