General information
Northern and Central England bring together historic cities, industrial heritage, music, football, universities, national parks, pubs and greener landscapes. It is less polished than the south, but often more characterful.
Trips and nature
The region is strong in national parks: Lake District, Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and the Northumberland coast. Weather is wetter, but that is exactly why everything is so green.
Food and atmosphere
York has medieval walls and Viking layers, Manchester industrial and music history, Liverpool Beatles and port heritage, Durham and Hadrian’s Wall major historical weight. Food is hearty: pies, roasts, fish and chips, curry, beer and food halls.
Transport and stay
Big cities are well connected by train. A car helps for national parks, coast and countryside. Manchester and Liverpool are useful bases with airports.
