General information
Liguria and the Italian Riviera are a narrow, dramatic strip between mountains and sea. The region offers Genoa, maritime history, colourful villages, cliffs, small beaches, coastal paths, gardens and food built around basil, olive oil and the sea. Key places include Genoa, Cinque Terre, Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo, Camogli, Sanremo, La Spezia and the coast towards France.
Trips and nature
Liguria is steep, green and maritime. Cinque Terre combines terraced vineyards, villages above the sea and coastal trails; Portofino is more elegant and quieter; the western Riviera has gentler seaside resorts. The sea is best from June to September, while spring and autumn are better for walking and fewer crowds.
Food and atmosphere
Genoa is the cultural centre, a former maritime republic with palaces, narrow lanes, a port and strong urban energy. Cinque Terre is beautiful but heavily visited, so it is important to respect trails, village capacity and weather. Food is excellent: pesto alla genovese, focaccia, trofie, farinata, seafood, anchovies, white wine and gelato after a climb.
Transport and stay
Liguria is easy to explore by train, especially the coastal stretch between Genoa, Cinque Terre and La Spezia. A car can be more of a problem because of parking and narrow roads. The area is ideal for 3 to 6 days, the sea, walking trails, colourful villages, food and a combination with Tuscany or France.
