General information
Alentejo is Portugal’s slow, spacious and rural south, known for whitewashed towns, cork landscapes, wine, castles, big skies and a beautifully unhurried rhythm.
Trips and nature
The landscape is wide and dry, with plains, cork oaks, olive groves, vineyards, reservoirs and a quieter Atlantic coast in the west.
Food and atmosphere
Évora, hilltop towns, megaliths, castles, convents and regional food give Alentejo a deep historical and culinary identity.
Transport and stay
A car is highly useful because distances are long and public transport is limited outside main towns. Summer heat can be serious.
