General information

Crete is large enough for a full trip on its own. It combines Minoan sites, Venetian towns, high mountains, gorges, beaches, monasteries and excellent food.

Trips and nature

The north is more urban and resort-oriented, the interior mountainous, and the south quieter and wilder. Samaria, Balos and Elafonissi are major natural highlights.

Food and atmosphere

Crete has a strong island identity, from Knossos and the Heraklion museum to Chania and Rethymno. Food includes dakos, cheeses, olive oil, lamb, herbs, honey and raki.

Transport and stay

Crete has airports in Heraklion and Chania, ferries and buses. A car is useful for mountains, the south coast and less accessible beaches.
