General information
Savonia, Karelia and Eastern Finland are a quieter and deeply forested part of the country, shaped by lakes, islands, border history, Orthodox influences and rural traditions.
Trips and nature
The region has some of Finland’s most beautiful lake landscapes, with forests, waterways, ridges and national parks. It is excellent for paddling, cottages, hiking and summer solitude.
Food and atmosphere
Karelia adds border culture, Orthodox churches, music and distinctive food traditions. Savonia brings lake towns, markets and relaxed humour. Food includes Karelian pies, fish, mushrooms, berries, rye bread and local pastries.
Transport and stay
Distances are long and public transport is more limited than in the south. A car is very useful for lakes, villages, national parks and borderland routes.
