Utrecht and Central Netherlands offer a very practical, charming and slightly calmer alternative to Amsterdam, with strong rail links and a lively student atmosphere.
Trips and nature
The area combines canals, rivers, polders, forests and country estates. It is excellent for cycling and short trips into softer Dutch countryside.

Utrecht has a medieval centre, cathedral tower, wharf cellars, museums and a strong café culture. Nearby castles and towns add historical depth.

Utrecht is one of the Netherlands’ key rail hubs. It works very well without a car, especially for city breaks and train-based travel.
