General information
Milan, the Lakes and Lombardy are a northern Italian region of fashion, business, design, lakes, mountains and elegant towns. Milan is modern, fast and stylish, while Lakes Como, Garda and Maggiore add promenades, villas, boats and Alpine views. The area includes Milan, Bergamo, Brescia, Mantua, Cremona, Como, Lecco, Bellagio, Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore and Valtellina.
Trips and nature
The main natural draw is the combination of lakes and Alpine foothills. Como is dramatic and elegant, Garda is larger and more recreational, while Maggiore is quieter and stretches between Italy and Switzerland. Spring and autumn are best for towns and lakes, summer for swimming and boat trips, winter for Milan, culture and excursions towards the mountains.
Food and atmosphere
Milan is culturally strong thanks to the Duomo, La Scala, Brera, design, fashion and modern districts. Bergamo has a beautiful upper town, Mantua a Renaissance heritage and Cremona a musical tradition. Food is northern Italian: risotto alla milanese, ossobuco, polenta, cheeses, lake fish, panettone and wines from Franciacorta and Valtellina.
Transport and stay
Milan has major airports, high-speed trains and excellent connections across Italy. The lakes can be reached by train, boat and bus, but a car helps for smaller towns and mountain trips. The area is ideal for 4 to 8 days, city life, design, lakes, food and a combination with Switzerland.
