General information
Eastern Anatolia is a vast, mountainous and rougher part of Turkey, with high plateaus, snow, lakes, fortresses, Armenian and Caucasian heritage and long distances.
Trips and nature
The region is continental and mountainous. Lake Van is huge and saline, Ararat dominates the eastern landscape and winters are long and cold.
Food and atmosphere
Ani near Kars recalls Armenian heritage, Van has historic island churches and Erzurum old trade and religious layers. Food is hearty: meat, bread, cheese, honey, tea, soups and Van breakfasts.
Transport and stay
Eastern Anatolia needs more planning than western Turkey. Domestic flights to Van, Erzurum or Kars help, but overland distances are long.
