General information

North Iceland is one of the country’s most rewarding regions, with Akureyri as a friendly base and Mývatn as a volcanic and geothermal highlight.

Trips and nature

The region offers waterfalls, lava fields, steaming ground, whale-watching coast, mountains and winter landscapes. Mývatn, Goðafoss, Dettifoss and Húsavík are key places.

Food and atmosphere

Akureyri has cafés, museums, gardens and a surprisingly lively cultural scene for its size. Húsavík is strongly linked with whale watching and the northern coast.

Transport and stay

Akureyri has domestic air links and road access. A car is very useful, especially for Mývatn, waterfalls and the wider Diamond Circle.
