Trabzon and Sumela add historical depth, Rize is linked with tea and Safranbolu with Ottoman architecture. Food includes hamsi, corn bread, cheesy dishes, tea, butter and honey.

The region is best explored by car or by combining domestic flights and buses. Trabzon and Samsun have airports, while mountain areas need more planning.
