General information
Provence and the French Riviera are France’s classic Mediterranean south, combining old ports, Roman heritage, lavender country, hill villages, markets, beaches, cliffs and glamorous coastal towns.
Trips and nature
The region ranges from the Calanques and Mediterranean beaches to lavender plateaus, olive groves, limestone hills, gorges and the pre-Alps. Summer can be hot and crowded.
Food and atmosphere
Marseille, Nice, Avignon, Arles, Aix-en-Provence and many villages offer Roman, papal, Provençal, maritime, artistic and Belle Époque layers.
Transport and stay
Marseille and Nice have major transport links. Trains work along the coast, but a car helps for hill villages, lavender areas, gorges and inland Provence.
