The Carpathians, Prahova Valley and mountain Romania are the country’s classic highland region, combining resorts, castles, hiking, forests, ski areas and quick access from Bucharest.
Trips and nature
The landscape is mountainous and forested, with ridges, valleys, waterfalls, caves and wildlife. Bucegi and nearby ranges are the main outdoor focus.
Food and atmosphere
Sinaia and Peleș Castle bring royal mountain glamour, while resorts and villages preserve hiking, skiing and mountain holiday traditions.
Transport and stay
Prahova Valley is reachable by train from Bucharest, but weekends can be very busy. A car helps for wider mountain routes, though traffic can test your optimism.
