General information
Valais, Zermatt and the Matterhorn represent high Alpine Switzerland in its most dramatic form, with four-thousanders, glaciers, dry valleys, vineyards, thermal spas and famous mountain villages.
Trips and nature
The Matterhorn is one of the world’s most recognisable peaks, while the Aletsch Glacier is a major Alpine highlight. Summers are for hiking, winters for skiing and autumn for wine and views.
Food and atmosphere
Valais combines German- and French-speaking areas, mountain traditions, wine and alpinism. Zermatt is famous but still shaped by mountain logic. Food includes raclette, fondue, dried meat, cheese, wine and apricots.
Transport and stay
Zermatt is reached by train and is car-free for regular traffic. The Rhône valley has good rail links, while a car helps for some side valleys.
