General information
Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands and the Irish interior are a slower, quieter and more understated part of the country. Instead of dramatic cliffs, the region offers rivers, lakes, canals, old monastic places, market towns and relaxed inland travel.
Trips and nature
The Shannon is the main natural axis, with lakes, wetlands, boglands, river islands and gentle countryside. It is ideal for boating, cycling, walking, fishing and slow travel rather than quick sightseeing.
Food and atmosphere
The region has important early Christian and monastic heritage, including places such as Clonmacnoise. Athlone and smaller towns add river history, pubs, local food and a very everyday Irish atmosphere.
Transport and stay
Athlone and several larger towns are reachable by train or bus, but a car is useful for lakes, villages, monastic sites and quiet rural roads. This is a region for slowing down, not ticking off landmarks.
