General information

Sicily is an island with enormous cultural and natural density. It offers Greek temples, Norman churches, Arab influences, Baroque towns, Mount Etna, lively markets, beaches, smaller islands and cuisine that could justify a trip on its own. Key places include Palermo, Monreale, Cefalù, Catania, Etna, Taormina, Syracuse, Noto, Ragusa, Agrigento, Trapani, Erice, the Egadi Islands and the Aeolian Islands.

Trips and nature

Sicily is naturally very varied. Etna is an active volcano and the island’s main natural symbol; the coast has rocky and sandy beaches, while the smaller islands add volcanic landscapes and sea. Spring and autumn are best for exploring, summer is hot and better suited to the coast, while the interior can be exhausting.

Food and atmosphere

Culturally, Sicily combines Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, Spanish and Italian layers. Palermo and Monreale have exceptional monuments, Agrigento Greek temples and the southeast Baroque towns such as Noto and Ragusa. Food is fantastic: arancini, caponata, pasta alla Norma, cannoli, granita, seafood, pistachios, Etna wines and Marsala.

Transport and stay

Palermo and Catania are the main airports and transport bases. A car is very useful for the island as a whole, because public transport does not always connect smaller places well. Sicily is ideal for 7 to 14 days, history, volcanoes, beaches, food and road trips; for shorter stays, focus either on the west or the east.
