General information
Zemgale, Rundāle and Southern Latvia form one of Latvia’s gentler and more agricultural regions. It is less dramatic than the coast or Gauja, but very useful for travellers interested in palaces, small towns, quiet roads and easy cross-border routes towards Lithuania.
Trips and nature
The landscape is flatter, open and fertile, shaped by rivers, fields, parks and manor estates. It is not a wilderness region, but it has a peaceful rural rhythm and good short stops between Riga, Bauska and the Lithuanian border.
Food and atmosphere
Rundāle Palace is the main highlight and one of the most impressive Baroque sights in Latvia. Jelgava and Bauska add ducal, river and fortress history, while the region as a whole reflects Latvia’s old manor and agricultural traditions.
Transport and stay
Zemgale is easy to reach from Riga by road, bus or train to larger towns. A car is useful for Rundāle, Bauska, manor houses and smaller villages, especially if continuing towards Lithuania.
