Žemaitija, or Samogitia, is a culturally distinct region of north-western Lithuania, with strong local identity, towns, lakes and forested countryside.
Trips and nature
The region has rolling hills, lakes, forests and quiet rural roads. It feels less obvious but very local.
Food and atmosphere
Samogitian identity, dialects, religious sites and manor history give the region a special place in Lithuania.
Transport and stay
A car is useful for towns, manor houses, lakes and rural areas, though main centres are reachable by bus.
